The Delhi Jal Board is preparing to replace old and damaged water pipelines in Shakarpur, Mandawali and Pandav Nagar, a move expected to improve water quality and supply pressure for around two lakh residents in east Delhi. The plan follows recurring complaints about contaminated drinking water and inadequate supply reaching homes.
According to Delhi Jal Board officials cited by Jagran, new ductile iron pipelines with diameters ranging from 100 millimetres to 200 millimetres will be laid along main roads and lanes in the three localities. The replacement is intended to reduce leakage and strengthen the local distribution network.
Residents in these areas have reported instances of sewage-mixed water entering the drinking-water supply. They have also faced low pressure, which affects the quantity of water reaching homes. The proximity of water and sewer lines means leaks in ageing pipelines can increase the risk of contamination, according to the report.
The project will not be limited to replacing the main pipelines. Existing connections supplying individual homes will also be inspected. Where leaks or interruptions are found, repairs and other corrective work will be carried out, officials said. The stated aim is to reduce water wastage and improve pressure at household connections.
Ductile iron pipes are being selected for the work because they are considered stronger and more durable than the ageing lines currently serving parts of the area. The Delhi Jal Board has not provided, in the cited report, a project completion date, the estimated cost or a detailed construction schedule.
The replacement work is expected to require activity on roads and in lanes, although the report does not specify the locations or duration of any planned disruptions. Delhi Jal Board officials said safety standards would be followed during construction.
After the replacement, regular water-quality testing and prompt action on complaints will remain important to ensure that improved infrastructure translates into safer household supply. The next steps are the preparation and implementation of the pipeline replacement and the inspection of household connections in Shakarpur, Mandawali and Pandav Nagar.
