Tambaram Subway Flooding Traps Car, Raises Monsoon Safety Concerns

Tambaram subway flooding after heavy overnight rain left a car partially submerged and disrupted a key connection between East and West Tambaram in Chennai’s suburbs, raising concerns over the readiness of the Tambaram Municipal Corporation to manage waterlogging during the northeast monsoon.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed suburban parts of Chennai from Saturday night until Sunday morning. Rainwater accumulated in the underpass, which connects GST Road with Tambaram-Velachery Main Road and is used by cars, autorickshaws and two-wheelers.

A car attempting to cross the flooded subway became trapped and was partially submerged. The occupants managed to get out of the vehicle, while local residents helped retrieve it from the waterlogged stretch. The incident caused commotion in the area and made it difficult for other motorists to pass through the underpass.

The flooding exposed the operational importance of the subway during heavy rainfall. Unlike an open road, an underpass can quickly become hazardous when water collects at its lowest point, leaving motorists with limited visibility and fewer escape options. In this case, the accumulated rainwater forced vehicles to negotiate the stretch cautiously or avoid it altogether.

Motorists alleged that electric pumps installed to remove rainwater from the subway were not switched on promptly. The allegation was made in the context of the water accumulating after the overnight rain; the report did not include a response from the Tambaram Municipal Corporation on pump operations or the timing of its emergency response.

Residents have urged the municipal corporation to strengthen monsoon preparedness by operating pumps promptly during intense rainfall and monitoring vulnerable subways more closely. They have also called for faster water-removal operations and adequate safety measures to prevent motorists from being stranded in flooded underpasses.

The incident comes as the northeast monsoon increases the risk of sudden water accumulation across low-lying urban infrastructure. For the Tambaram subway, the immediate public concern is whether pumping systems, monitoring arrangements and warning measures can be activated quickly enough to keep the underpass safe during subsequent spells of heavy rain.
