Barapullah Phase 3 traffic signals are being installed at key merging points on the Mayur Vihar–AIIMS route after recurring congestion affected a 3.5-kilometre stretch near Sarai Kale Khan, according to the traffic department as reported by Jagran. The intervention is intended to regulate vehicle movement on the corridor and reduce bottlenecks affecting traffic between Mayur Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan, Ashram and AIIMS.
The congestion has been reported on the lane used by traffic travelling from Mayur Vihar towards AIIMS after the opening of Barapullah Phase 3. The most affected section is near Sarai Kale Khan, where merging traffic has led to sustained pressure on the route. The traffic department has now begun implementing signal-based controls at locations where vehicle volumes are high and bottlenecks are forming.
Signals have already been installed at the merging point of the Barapullah flyover loop on the route connecting Ashram and Sarai Kale Khan. The traffic department said additional signals would be installed wherever heavy traffic pressure and bottlenecks are identified.
Before the signal work began, the traffic department carried out a drone survey of the corridor and submitted recommendations to the Public Works Department. These included installing signals at suitable merging points, improving traffic control, and changing the geometry of the merging point near Sundial to improve vehicle movement.
The department also advised that traffic should be diverted or controlled towards National Highway 24 wherever possible to reduce pressure on the Barapullah Phase 3 route. Traffic diversions are already being implemented when required, according to the report.
The measures focus on the points where different traffic streams converge rather than on the entire corridor. The merging areas near the Barapullah flyover loop and Sundial are therefore central to the current traffic-management response. The signal installations are intended to create controlled movement at these junctions and prevent the merging points from becoming persistent bottlenecks.
Barapullah Phase 3 forms part of the route used by commuters travelling between Mayur Vihar and central and southern Delhi, including the AIIMS area. Congestion on the corridor can affect traffic approaching or leaving Sarai Kale Khan and the Ashram side of the network. The traffic department’s recommendations indicate that signal control, changes to road geometry and selective diversions are being considered together rather than as a single measure.
The work is being undertaken after the traffic department’s assessment and recommendations to the PWD. The department has not provided, in the supplied report, a completion date for all proposed signals or a quantified estimate of the expected reduction in travel time. Further implementation will depend on identifying locations where traffic pressure continues to create bottlenecks.
For now, the next steps are the installation of signals at additional high-pressure points and the continued use of traffic diversions where required. The authorities’ response will be visible as signal controls are extended along the corridor and traffic management is adjusted at the identified merging locations.
