The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, rainfall and gusty winds across several parts of India over the next few days, while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Maharashtra’s coastal Konkan belt are expected to face heatwave conditions on October 12.
Delhi is likely to see partly cloudy skies and strong winds, with speeds reaching up to 50 kmph in some parts of the city. The change in weather has been attributed to a western disturbance and a cyclonic circulation over neighbouring states. The forecast could affect road travel, outdoor activity and other city services exposed to sudden wind and weather changes.
The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the coastal Konkan belt. Heatwave conditions are expected at isolated places in south Konkan districts, while isolated parts of north Konkan may experience hot and humid weather, according to the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre. Green warnings are returning across Maharashtra, indicating that no adverse-weather action is currently required.
In West Bengal, parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, may receive rain during the early days of the five-day Durga Puja festival. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall at a few places between October 15 and 17. Light rain or thundershowers may occur at one or two places in south Bengal on October 18 and 19, while mainly dry weather is expected on October 20 and 21.
Jharkhand is likely to see the southwest monsoon withdraw over the next four days. The state has recorded a rainfall deficit of 2%, while the monsoon has already withdrawn from northwestern districts and parts of central Jharkhand, including Garhwa, Chatra, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Koderma.
Rainfall activity is expected to continue in parts of Uttar Pradesh over the weekend, although the latest forecast does not specify a heavy-rainfall warning. Uttarakhand may receive isolated to scattered rainfall between October 12 and 14, along with gusty winds of 30-40 kmph and gusts reaching 50 kmph. Himachal Pradesh is likely to see isolated to scattered rainfall on October 13 and 14, while parts of West and East Rajasthan may receive similar rainfall on October 12.
Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning. In the Northeast, Assam and Meghalaya may receive rainfall on October 13 and 14, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to see isolated to scattered rainfall between October 12 and 14.
Southern states are also expected to experience unsettled weather. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may receive isolated to scattered rainfall between October 12 and 14, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph forecast through October 12. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema may see isolated to scattered rainfall, thunderstorms and strong surface winds.
South interior Karnataka is likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall, with isolated heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning expected on Friday. Coastal Karnataka may experience isolated showers through October 14. Lakshadweep is likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph.
The IMD’s latest forecast therefore combines rain and storm risks across southern, northeastern and Himalayan regions with heat stress in Mumbai and the Konkan coast. The forecast period extends through the coming days, with conditions varying by state and district.
