Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to embark on a comprehensive park cleaning initiative this Friday. The operation, scheduled to commence at 6 a.m. and conclude by noon, aims to address the maintenance and sanitation needs of the city’s numerous parks.
The GCC oversees a network of 871 parks spread across 15 municipal zones, including 616 parks maintained by outsourced agencies, 88 adopted by corporate and private entities, and 165 directly managed by the civic body. Despite the extensive cleaning efforts, all parks will remain accessible to walkers during the exercise.
Chennai’s Mayor and Corporation Commissioner, J, will personally inspect the cleaning drive to ensure its effectiveness. Zonal officers have been instructed to mobilise adequate labour and conservancy staff for the initiative. The programme will also involve a thorough assessment of the parks to identify and document any damage. This data will be used to prepare repair estimates, which will be submitted to the GCC Park Headquarters for further action. Regional Deputy Commissioners have been tasked with closely monitoring the cleaning operations, and nodal officers have been appointed to oversee the implementation. The GCC’s detailed approach highlights its commitment to maintaining the city’s green spaces in optimal condition.
The distribution of parks managed by the GCC includes 14 in Tiruvottiyur, 32 in Manali, 63 in Madhavaram, 56 in Tondiarpet, 27 in Royapuram, 48 in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, 92 in Ambattur, 41 in Anna Nagar, 42 in Teynampet, 59 in Kodambakkam, 83 in Valasaravakkam, 70 in Alandur, 82 in Adyar, 71 in Perungudi, and 91 in Sholinganallur. Additionally, two parks have been repurposed for metro rail projects by CMRL. This large-scale cleaning programme reflects the GCC’s proactive stance in ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for the city’s residents, thereby enhancing public health and the overall quality of urban life.
