Chennai’s Sewage Pumping Station Shutdown, What to Know

Residents in several Chennai zones should prepare for potential sewage overflow on September 4 and 5 due to crucial infrastructure maintenance. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) announced that the Purasaiwakkam sewage pumping station will be non-operational during this period.

This necessary shutdown will allow for valve repairs in the sewer pipeline on Dr. Ambedkar Road, which is vital for constructing a new flyover over the Ganesapuram subway. The disruption will impact areas including Royapuram, Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Anna Nagar, and Teynampet. Specific locations expected to experience sewage overflow or stagnation are Ayanavaram, Chetpet, Greams Road, Shenoy Nagar, Perambur, and Sembium. Residents in these zones should prepare for potential inconvenience as the sewage pumping station will be down from 6 p.m. on September 4 until 6 p.m. on September 5.

This maintenance work represents a crucial step in enhancing Chennai’s infrastructure. The construction of the new flyover aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the city. Although the temporary shutdown may cause disruptions, the long-term benefits of reduced traffic and enhanced transport links are expected to outweigh these short-term inconveniences.

Residents are advised to take preventive measures to minimise the impact of possible sewage issues. The CMWSSB suggests that local communities stay updated with notifications and follow any additional advisories. By doing so, they can better manage potential disruptions and contribute to a smoother transition during the maintenance period. The temporary closure of the sewage pumping station, while causing some inconvenience, reflects Chennai’s commitment to modernising and improving its infrastructure. The planned improvements will lead to more efficient transport systems and ultimately benefit the city’s economy and quality of life.
