Vizag Metro Seeks Centre’s Nod as Naidu Takes Projects to Delhi

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will visit New Delhi for two days from Wednesday to seek central approvals and financial support for the Vizag metro rail project, a beach corridor and other state initiatives, according to a PTI report published by Deccan Chronicle.

Naidu is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit. The proposed discussions will also cover special financial assistance for Andhra Pradesh, where drought-like conditions have been reported in the context of the prevailing El Niño situation.

The Vizag metro is among the projects the Chief Minister is expected to take up with the Centre. The report does not specify the length, alignment, station count, estimated cost or proposed funding structure of the metro project. It also does not state whether a detailed project report has received technical clearance or identify a target date for construction.

The project is significant for Visakhapatnam because any future metro system would require decisions on corridor planning, land use, financing and coordination between state and central authorities. The available report, however, provides no details on the proposed route, implementation agency, construction schedule or expected passenger capacity.

Naidu is also expected to request central action on a river-linking project in Andhra Pradesh. During a meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil, he will discuss ways to utilise large volumes of floodwater flowing from the Godavari River into the sea, along with the proposed river-linking initiatives.

The water-related agenda places the metro proposal alongside wider questions of state infrastructure financing and water management. The report does not provide details of the proposed river-linking design, the rivers that would be connected, the anticipated cost, land requirements or the environmental and administrative approvals that would be needed.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to meet Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and other Union ministers. He will seek special assistance to provide relief to the state amid drought-like conditions and will discuss central support for the proposed Godavari Pushkaralu next year, described in the report as a Kumbh Mela-like pilgrimage.

Naidu is also expected to discuss the Rayalaseema Global Horticulture Hub project with the Finance Minister. The report does not specify the project’s proposed investment, location, implementation framework or timeline.

On Thursday, Naidu will participate with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in the curtain raiser for the CII Partnership Conference, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. He is expected to return to Amaravati late on Thursday. Further details on central approvals, funding commitments or timelines for the Vizag metro and other projects will depend on the outcomes of the scheduled meetings.
