Delhi’s power discoms have introduced a Tatkal service for temporary power connections, allowing organisers of Durga Puja celebrations, Ramlilas, Diwali melas, weddings and other festive events to receive electricity connections within 24 hours after completing the required formalities and meeting technical feasibility conditions.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL), which supplies electricity to around nine million people in north Delhi, said organisers can apply for temporary connections at customer care centres located at division offices. Applications and payments can also be completed online through the discom’s website.
The service is intended to reduce the time required to arrange electricity for events that operate for limited periods but may involve substantial temporary demand. Tata Power-DDL said zonal offices are keeping meters available for quick installation once an application and demand note have been submitted.
BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) have also introduced the Tatkal service in their respective supply areas. The two discoms together serve more than 54 lakh consumers across Delhi.
Consumers in the BRPL and BYPL areas can apply through the BSES website, the BRPL Power App, the BYPL Connect app, WhatsApp, customer care centres and call centres. The multiple application channels are intended to allow organisers to complete the process either digitally or through physical service points.
The 24-hour timeline is subject to completion of all formalities and technical feasibility. This means the service does not remove the requirement for applicants to submit the necessary details, make the applicable payment and meet the technical conditions for a temporary connection.
For event organisers, the process places the discoms’ application, payment and meter-installation systems at the centre of short-duration electricity planning. Temporary events often require power for lighting, sound systems, food preparation and other operations, but the service announcement does not specify the connection capacity, tariff or documents required for individual applications.
The rollout covers the service territories of Delhi’s three major power distribution companies. Tata Power-DDL operates in north Delhi, while BRPL and BYPL serve their respective areas. Applicants therefore need to use the discom that supplies electricity in the location where the event is being organised.
The discoms have not indicated in the supplied announcement how long temporary connections will remain active, whether the 24-hour timeline applies to every application or what additional procedures will apply at larger venues. The immediate operational step for organisers is to submit an application through the relevant discom’s available online or offline channel and complete the demand-note and payment requirements.
