Kochi’s Relove Campaign Opens New Route to Cut Urban Waste

The Ernakulam district administration has launched the Relove campaign in Kochi to help residents reuse discarded or unused items through swap shops managed by Kudumbashree, adding a public-participation mechanism to the district’s sustainable waste-management efforts.

Led by district collector G Priyanka, the campaign is intended to create opportunities for people to exchange items they no longer need but that may still be useful to others. The initiative is also aimed at reducing consumption and limiting the generation of waste.

According to the district administration, Relove is being implemented with the support of government institutions, agencies and colleges. The campaign will focus particularly on encouraging younger people to participate in reuse and move usable goods back into circulation instead of treating them as waste.

The central operating mechanism will be a network of swap shops. These facilities will be established and managed by the Kudumbashree District Mission, officials said. Residents will be able to deposit usable items and take other items they need from the shops.

The model places Kudumbashree, a community-based institutional network, at the centre of the exchange system. This could give the campaign an organised local implementation structure rather than relying only on one-time collection drives. However, the district administration’s announcement does not specify the number of swap shops, their locations, the types of items that will be accepted or the timeline for their opening.

The initiative addresses a recurring challenge in urban waste management: not every item discarded by one household has reached the end of its useful life. Creating a formal avenue for exchange can help separate reusable goods from material intended for disposal, provided residents have convenient access to the facilities and the items are screened and managed appropriately.

The district administration has positioned Relove as an effort to strengthen public participation in sustainable waste management. Its success will therefore depend on how effectively government institutions, colleges, agencies and local communities connect residents with the swap shops once they are established.

For Kochi, the campaign brings reuse into the operational side of waste management by linking household behaviour with an organised exchange network. The next stated step is the establishment and management of the swap shops by the Kudumbashree District Mission.
