EMB Revamp New Road, Lights, and Sewers

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has unveiled an extensive redevelopment initiative for the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (EMB), a critical artery in the city’s transportation network. The comprehensive project aims to address various infrastructure needs along the 22-kilometre stretch of the road, from Ultadanga to Garia, promising significant improvements in road quality, visibility, and environmental aesthetics.

The ambitious plan involves a complete relaying of the EMB, a measure designed to rectify current road surface issues and improve overall driving conditions. This effort is expected to enhance road safety and contribute to smoother traffic flow across one of Kolkata’s most heavily utilised routes. In addition to the roadworks, the KMC has committed to modernising the road’s lighting system. The entire stretch will be equipped with warm white LED lights, a move intended to boost visibility during foggy conditions and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians alike. The upgrade to LED lighting is anticipated to not only enhance illumination but also offer energy efficiency and reduced maintenance costs compared to traditional lighting methods.

The development plan also addresses longstanding issues with the city’s sewer infrastructure. As part of the revamp, major sewer lines along the EMB will undergo desilting. This crucial maintenance work aims to prevent blockages and ensure efficient waste management, thus reducing the risk of road flooding and associated disruptions. Furthermore, the project will see the introduction of new greenery along the Bypass. The parks department will undertake the planting of saplings on the median verges, contributing to the environmental beautification of the area. This initiative is expected to enhance the visual appeal of the EMB while promoting ecological sustainability.

Overall, the KMC’s development plan for the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass represents a multifaceted approach to urban infrastructure enhancement. By addressing road conditions, lighting, sewage maintenance, and green space, the project aims to deliver a comprehensive upgrade that benefits both the daily commuters and the broader community. As the work progresses, it is anticipated that these improvements will have a positive impact on traffic management, safety, and the aesthetic value of the EMB. The KMC’s proactive measures reflect a commitment to enhancing Kolkata’s infrastructure and addressing the needs of its growing population.
