A Bengaluru woman has left her night-shift IT job to drive an autorickshaw, saying the work gives her greater control over her time and allows her to stay close to her mother after her father’s death. She also told a content creator that she now earns more from driving the auto than she did in her corporate job.
The woman’s account was shared in a video by content creator Tanvi, who travelled in her autorickshaw and recorded her story. According to the report published by Vijay Karnataka, the woman had been working in the IT sector, where night shifts and work pressure made it difficult for her to spend time with her mother.
She decided to leave the job after her father died and the responsibility of caring for her mother fell on her. Driving an autorickshaw, she said, allows her to choose her working hours and remain closer to home. Her decision also followed health problems that she associated with night-shift work, including polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS.
The decision was not immediately accepted by her family. She said relatives opposed the idea of a woman going out on the road to drive an autorickshaw. She nevertheless stayed with the choice, arguing that driving an auto was not inferior work and that she was proud of the income it provided.
The woman said passengers sometimes ask about her previous job and are surprised when they hear her speak in English. Her account has drawn attention because it challenges the assumption that a corporate job is necessarily more desirable than informal or self-employed work. In her case, the shift was driven by the need for flexibility, family care and control over her daily schedule.
She has not ruled out returning to the IT sector. According to her account, she would consider another corporate job if it offered a day shift and better pay. Until then, autorickshaw driving remains her chosen livelihood and a way to support her household while spending more time with her mother.
