Patna rain is expected to ease from Sunday as the depression over central India weakens, but heavy showers, gusty winds and drainage operations continued across Bihar on Saturday, affecting western and central districts. The India Meteorological Department’s Patna office said moderate rain was likely in the state on Sunday, followed by isolated showers from Monday.
The weather system originated as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal and crossed the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast. By Saturday, it had weakened into a depression over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south interior Odisha and was moving north-northwest towards southeast Uttar Pradesh, according to the IMD.
The meteorological office said western Bihar could still receive very heavy rain, while central districts were likely to experience heavy rainfall. Gopalganj, East Champaran, West Champaran, Saran, Siwan, Patna and Sheohar were among the districts affected by heavy rain and strong winds.
In Patna, the municipal corporation continued round-the-clock drainage operations as rain placed pressure on the city’s road and storm-water systems. Municipal commissioner Yashpal Meena inspected Harding Road, the airport and other locations to review the civic response.
The corporation deployed super sucker machines at Bakri Market, Gandhi Maidan and Karbigahiya. Municipal teams also cleared roads where fallen trees had obstructed movement. The operations indicate that the immediate civic response was focused on removing accumulated water and restoring road access at vulnerable locations while the rain continued.
The IMD’s Patna meteorologist Kumar Gaurav advised farmers not to irrigate fields during the wet spell. Farmers were also asked to move harvested kharif crops to covered locations and store crops that had been placed out for drying in a protected manner.
Residents were advised to remain indoors during periods of strong wind, while boatmen were asked to stay away from riverbanks. The continuing rain and wind also created operational risks for road users and people near exposed areas, particularly in districts receiving heavy or very heavy showers.
The IMD’s current forecast points to a gradual reduction in rainfall as the depression weakens. Moderate rain is expected on Sunday, with isolated showers likely from Monday, while the Patna Municipal Corporation’s drainage and fallen-tree clearance operations remain the immediate response in the city.
