The IMD weather forecast has warned of heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning across several parts of India on September 27, with extremely heavy rainfall likely in Uttarakhand and very heavy rain expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Delhi-NCR, Punjab and several other states are also likely to experience rain, thunderstorms or strong winds.
Delhi is forecast to record a minimum temperature of 22°C and a maximum of 31°C on September 27. The forecast does not indicate a specific weather warning for the national capital, but Faridabad and Gurgaon could experience thunderstorms and lightning as the wider Haryana-Delhi region remains under a heavy-rain warning.
In Uttar Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in eastern parts of the state and very heavy rain in western Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely. The warning is expected to ease from September 28. The state government has placed district administrations on alert, with district magistrates directed to maintain vigilance and monitor arrangements in areas facing a risk of flash floods. Schools have been kept closed in districts under a red alert and facing the possibility of flash floods.
Uttarakhand is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall on September 27, with thunderstorms and lightning. Heavy rain is likely to continue on September 28. The forecast raises the risk of landslides and road blockages in mountainous areas, while rivers and streams could see rising water levels. Waterlogging is also possible in the plains. The state government has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and regularly check weather updates.
Himachal Pradesh is likely to see very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning on September 27, with heavy rain continuing on September 28. Punjab is also expected to receive heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning on September 27, although no warning is currently indicated for the state from September 28.
The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Jharkhand, east Rajasthan and several northeastern states. Authorities in Jharkhand have advised residents to stay away from open fields, trees and electric poles during lightning activity and to exercise caution while travelling through waterlogged areas.
In Andhra Pradesh, cloudy skies, light rain and strong surface winds are expected in several districts through September 29. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are likely to receive rain from September 27 to 30, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, including gusts of up to 50 kmph, during September 27-28. Similar wind and storm conditions are likely in Rayalaseema.
The forecast also covers rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and parts of southern India. Darjeeling has already witnessed landslides, and further rain in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri could increase the risk of additional slope failures.
According to the latest forecast, intense weather activity is expected to ease across several northern states after September 27. Rain is likely to continue in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on September 28, while warnings for Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Punjab are expected to ease.
