The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has awarded a Rs 92.95 crore work order to Softtech Engineers Limited to develop a Digital Twin platform aimed at improving vessel traffic, cargo movement, logistics management and infrastructure monitoring at the port.
According to an official statement issued by JNPA, the platform will create a real-time digital representation of the port’s assets, infrastructure and operations. It is intended to give officials a consolidated view of port activity and support faster, data-based decisions across different operational areas.
JNPA Chairperson Gaurav Dayal said the core functionalities of the platform are targeted for implementation by February 2027, while the complete system is expected to become operational by February 2028. The phased timeline separates the initial deployment of key operational functions from the full rollout of the platform.
The Digital Twin is expected to bring vessel traffic management, cargo and logistics flows, infrastructure data and predictive analytics into a single operational environment. JNPA Deputy Chairperson Ravish Kumar Singh said the system would bring real-time data and predictive intelligence together to support port operations.
One of the platform’s stated functions is predictive maintenance. By monitoring the condition and performance of critical infrastructure, the system is intended to help identify potential problems before they lead to breakdowns. JNPA said this could reduce downtime, improve asset performance and extend the working life of port infrastructure.
The platform will also include safety and security-related capabilities, including enhanced surveillance, monitoring and incident-management functions. The authority said these tools are expected to improve its ability to track operational conditions and respond to issues within the port environment.
The project has an environmental monitoring component as well. The system will monitor green cover, air quality and water quality at the port, supporting JNPA’s sustainability objectives and enabling more integrated reporting of environmental conditions.
JNPA also expects the Digital Twin to help reduce vehicular congestion by improving the coordination of cargo and logistics flows. The authority said integrated dashboards and automated monitoring could support more efficient asset utilisation and service delivery, although the extent of these operational improvements will depend on implementation and the quality of data integrated into the system.
The platform is additionally expected to support statutory compliance and reporting through automated monitoring of regulatory requirements. This would place operational, maintenance, safety and environmental information within a common digital framework rather than keeping it separated across individual systems.
The next stated milestone is the implementation of the platform’s core functionalities by February 2027, followed by the expected operationalisation of the complete Digital Twin platform by February 2028.
