Ather Energy Targets Overseas Growth With 10-Lakh-Unit Plant Boost

Ather Energy is preparing an aggressive overseas expansion while prioritising India, where the electric two-wheeler maker is adding up to 10 lakh units of annual production capacity at a new Maharashtra facility and launching a scooter aimed at taking electric mobility to a wider set of buyers.

Chief Business Officer Ravneet S Phokela said exports could make a meaningful contribution to the company’s revenue over the next five to seven years. However, he said Ather would first focus on domestic demand and supply conditions before scaling its international business.

“So, we are looking at exports very aggressively now, except that given the current situation of demand and supply, we obviously have to prioritise domestic and consolidate our business here,” Phokela said in an interview with PTI. “We believe that in a five to seven year time horizon is when exports will have a meaningful contribution to our revenues, but between now and then we’ll keep opening markets.”

The next major addition to Ather’s manufacturing capacity will come from its upcoming plant in Maharashtra. The facility will have a total capacity of 10 lakh units a year, divided into two phases of 5 lakh units each, according to Phokela. The first phase is expected to go live around December this year, although the company estimates that it will take four to six months to reach full capacity.

The planned expansion links Ather’s international ambitions to its domestic manufacturing base. The company will need to balance new market launches overseas with supply requirements in India, where it is continuing to build its retail, service and charging network.

Ather also introduced its new electric scooter, Konarc, in New Delhi. The company is positioning the model for buyers in the broader electric-scooter segment and has priced it at Rs 79,999. The launch comes as the company seeks to make electric two-wheelers more accessible to mainstream users.

Delhi-NCR remains an important market for Ather. The company said electric-vehicle adoption in the region increased from 6.27 per cent in the first quarter of FY26 to 9.23 per cent in the first quarter of FY27, representing 38 per cent year-on-year growth, citing Vahan data.

To support its operations in the region, Ather currently has 11 Experience Centres and seven Service Centres in Delhi. It also has 273 LECCS fast-charging points across Delhi-NCR, according to the company.

“Delhi-NCR is an important market in our journey towards making electric mobility more accessible to a wider set of riders,” Phokela said. He added that the Konarc’s price and features were intended to support the transition to electric scooters in the region.

The Maharashtra plant’s first phase and the company’s planned overseas market openings will be the next milestones in Ather’s expansion strategy, while domestic demand and supply will remain the immediate priority.
