Chennai: As the potential for a commercial and IT boom in Pattabiram and its surrounding areas gains momentum, there is an increasing clamor from residents and local stakeholders for the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to consider extending its services to this burgeoning locality. This call comes on the heels of the recent CMRL contract award for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to extend the Metro from Koyambedu to Avadi.
The latest appeal from Pattabiram and Tiruninravur residents urges CMRL to expand the Metro Rail network beyond Avadi to reach Nemilichery Outer Ring Road (ORR) and even further up to Vendalur to Minjur. This proposed extension is seen as crucial for accommodating the needs of a diverse commuter base, including IT professionals, college students, and other daily travellers.
President of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Consumer Centre, articulated the growing demand, stating, “Rather than limiting the extension to Avadi, it would be more beneficial for the Metro to reach Nemilichery ORR circle. This would greatly support the IT workforce in Pattabiram and enhance connectivity for potential new developments, such as the Pattabiram Tidel Park. Extending up to the ORR and integrating with the planned Metro yard from ORR to Poonamallee would facilitate easier future expansions.”
In July, CMRL awarded the contract for the DPR to RITES Limited, covering a 16-kilometre corridor that will pass through key areas including Padi Pudhu Nagar, Ambattur, and Tirumullaivoyal. The corridor, which will feature 15 elevated stations, has been designed with the anticipated growth in IT parks, industrial zones, and densely populated areas in mind. The call for extending the Metro line reflects broader expectations of infrastructural support to match the rapid development in these areas. By addressing this request, CMRL would not only enhance the public transportation network but also encourage further commercial investments in the region.
