Three new foot overbridges will be built along the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in eastern Delhi at a total cost of approximately Rs 12.8 crore, with two projects at Geeta Colony and Ramesh Park formally launched on Wednesday. The bridges are expected to be completed within a year and will include lifts, lighting and security guards for pedestrians.
The National Highways Authority of India is constructing the two foot overbridges at Geeta Colony and Ramesh Park. Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra laid the foundation stones along with Yamuna Paar Development Board chairman Arvinder Singh Lovely, District Development Committee chairman Dr Anil Goyal and MLA Abhay Verma, according to a report by Jagran.
Malhotra said construction at the two locations had begun and work would also start soon at Garhi Mendu. The three facilities will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 12.8 crore, he said.
Each foot overbridge is planned to have lift access so that pedestrians can cross the expressway without negotiating the traffic lanes. Security guards will be deployed at the facilities, while adequate lighting will be provided for use at night, the minister said.
The projects are intended to address pedestrian safety on the Delhi section of the expressway, which passes through densely populated areas and connects residential, commercial and local activity zones in eastern Delhi. The announcement is significant for residents who cross the corridor on foot as part of their daily journeys, particularly in locations where a high-speed road separates neighbourhoods and local destinations.
The facilities are being planned after the opening of the Delhi section of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. The elevated corridor has also seen the start of parking facilities beneath it in the Delhi stretch, according to the report.
Malhotra described the foot overbridges as a step towards improving pedestrian safety and making daily travel easier for residents of eastern Delhi. The planned lifts, lighting and security deployment are intended to make the crossings usable beyond daylight hours and for people who may find stair-only access difficult.
The third bridge at Garhi Mendu remains the next announced project milestone. The report did not specify the exact construction start date for that facility or provide a detailed schedule for the individual bridges beyond the expected one-year completion period.
