Thane cluster development has formally begun at the Siddheshwar Lake area, with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directing the implementing developer to complete the project within three years and hand over homes to residents. The project is expected to address the long-delayed redevelopment of a settlement where approximately 6,000 people currently live.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Shinde said cluster redevelopment should not be limited to demolishing old and unsafe buildings and replacing them with new structures. He described it as an opportunity to transform the entire neighbourhood and called on developers to build attractive, modern and high-quality structures inspired by iconic buildings in London.
Shinde also urged developers not to focus only on profits, but to provide residents with safe, good-quality homes and improved public amenities. He said cluster redevelopment should bring changes not only to housing but also to infrastructure in the surrounding area.
The Siddheshwar cluster project will be implemented by Sugi Developers, according to the report. The redevelopment has been delayed for several years, and the start of construction marks the latest step in efforts to provide new homes to residents of the area.
The deputy chief minister said the Urban Development Department has made provisions for incentive floor space index for high-quality projects of this kind. The incentive is intended to support redevelopment that combines modern construction technology, infrastructure improvements and environmental considerations, he said.
The project’s stated objective extends beyond replacement housing. Residents are expected to receive modern homes along with better facilities in the redeveloped neighbourhood. Shinde told developers that citizens should receive amenities along with their new homes and said he was pressing for facilities including television-related provisions.
Cluster redevelopment in Thane has been positioned by the state government as a mechanism for addressing unsafe or ageing housing while reorganising larger urban areas. In the Siddheshwar project, the stated focus is on delivering secure and better-quality homes to residents who have been waiting for redevelopment for years.
Shinde asked the developer to complete the work within three years and place the keys to the new homes in residents’ hands. The implementation timeline and the quality of construction, infrastructure and amenities will therefore determine whether the project delivers the wider neighbourhood transformation promised at its launch.
