A protest over Tank Bund barricading in Hyderabad turned tense on Monday after members of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi attempted to remove iron structures installed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and city police ahead of Ganesh idol immersions.
The incident began around 11 am when a large contingent of Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi members arrived at Tank Bund and encountered iron barricades and large flex banners along the upper stretch. The banners, installed by Hyderabad City Police and GHMC, announced a strict ban on idol immersions in that area, according to a report by Telangana Today.
Members of the organisation said the barricading had been put up suddenly and without prior notice. They then tried to dismantle the structures, including iron barricades fixed to the lake’s railings. Police intervened as the protesters attempted to unbolt and remove the barricades, leading to tension at the site.
The confrontation places access to Tank Bund and the management of immersion activity at the centre of a dispute involving the civic body, the police and organisers of Ganesh festivities. The barricades and banners represent an operational restriction imposed at a prominent public waterfront, while the organisers are seeking continued access for devotees to immerse idols at Tank Bund.
Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi general secretary Ravinuthala Shashidhar demanded that GHMC allow devotees to continue immersions at Tank Bund. He cited a report submitted by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board to the High Court, saying that no contamination had been found during Ganesh immersion in Hussain Sagar Lake.
