Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: 21 Districts Face Heavy Rain, Strong Winds

Tamil Nadu is likely to receive heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds in several districts, while Chennai and its suburbs may see light to moderate showers during the evening and night, the Chennai Meteorological Centre said in its latest forecast.

The warning covers parts of 21 districts, including the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Madurai, Cuddalore, Tirupattur, Vellore and Tiruchirappalli. Puducherry and Karaikal are also expected to receive heavy rain in some areas.

According to the weather centre, the forecast follows rainfall across most parts of Tamil Nadu during the 24-hour period ending on the previous morning. Bettamugilalam in Krishnagiri district recorded the highest rainfall during that period, receiving 14.8 centimetres.

The weather system responsible for the spell had formed over the Bay of Bengal two days earlier. It is currently located over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea, the centre said. The system may move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal during the day.

It may strengthen further into a deep depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal the following day, according to the forecast. The system’s movement and intensification are being monitored as they could influence rainfall and wind conditions across parts of the state and neighbouring coastal areas.

In the districts under the warning, rain may be accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds in some places. These conditions can affect road travel, outdoor work, local transport operations and electricity services, particularly in areas where water accumulates quickly during intense showers. The weather centre’s forecast, however, does not specify district-level rainfall totals or individual urban locations beyond the areas listed.

For the rest of Tamil Nadu, light to moderate rain with thunder, lightning and strong winds is expected in a few places. Chennai and its suburban areas are likely to remain partly cloudy, with the possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in some parts during the evening and night.

The weather centre’s next updates on the depression’s movement and the distribution of rainfall will determine how the warning evolves across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
