The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has repaired a sewage leak in Vinayak Nagar Colony, Shaikpet, after residents’ complaints about overflowing sewage and a persistent stench were highlighted by Telangana Today.
HMWSSB workers addressed the leak on Sunday, bringing relief to residents and the local Ganesh Utsav Committee, according to a report published by Telangana Today. The repair followed coverage of residents being forced to install a 10-foot Ganesh idol beside overflowing sewage during Ganesh Chaturthi.
The sewage had inundated parts of the colony’s streets and created an unpleasant odour near the idol installation. Residents had previously complained about the problem, but the issue had remained unresolved before the media report drew attention to it.
Maryala Ajay Kumar, a member of the United Federation of Residents Welfare Associations and joint secretary of the Vinayak Nagar Colony Welfare Association, said two HMWSSB workers traced the leakage to a manhole and fixed it. The account was reported by Telangana Today.
The repair has addressed the immediate leakage reported by residents, but questions remain about the longer-term work planned for the area. Ajay Kumar alleged that Rs 23 lakh had been sanctioned for HMWSSB-related work, but that officials had not started the project. The report did not provide details of the sanctioning authority, the scope of the proposed work, or the reasons for the delay.
The episode illustrates how a local sewerage failure can affect more than road conditions. In this case, sewage overflow disrupted access through neighbourhood streets, created a persistent stench and affected a public religious installation. The incident also placed residents’ welfare association representatives in the position of repeatedly pursuing a basic civic service before the leak was repaired.
The immediate intervention was carried out after the Telangana Today report titled ‘Residents forced to install their idol next to overflowing sewage in Shaikpet’, published on September 19. Residents and the Ganesh Utsav Committee subsequently expressed relief at the resolution of the leakage problem.
