A container truck collision near Bhumkar bridge on Pune’s Mumbai-Bengaluru highway killed one person and injured six others early Saturday, while the crash temporarily disrupted traffic on the busy stretch in Narhe.
According to police, the container truck was travelling towards Mumbai when it struck a concrete pump vehicle from behind at around 12.15 am. The truck then hit another truck and a car near Bhumkar Bridge, resulting in a multi-vehicle crash.
Sandip Kumar, 22, from Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh, was inside the concrete pump vehicle and died in the accident, police said. Two other people in the same vehicle, Devendra Yadav and Ramsingh Ramnarayan, were injured.
The other injured people were identified as truck driver Sureshkumar, cleaner Jobin Samuel, car passenger Bhushan Saraf, and container truck driver Dhanraj Vaishnav. Police said all the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment. The report did not specify the condition of those injured.
A first information report has been registered at Narhe police station. Senior Police Inspector Varsha Deshmukh said Vaishnav, 32, a resident of Ajmer in Rajasthan, had been booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act, including charges related to causing death by negligence and rash driving.
Vaishnav has been detained and is being questioned, police said. The collision also led to a traffic jam on the highway until the vehicles involved were removed from the road, affecting movement on the Mumbai-bound stretch.
The police investigation and questioning of the detained driver will determine the circumstances leading to the crash. Authorities have not announced any further details about the case or the injured passengers’ medical condition.
