Vehicles travelling towards Greater Noida and Noida International Airport on the link expressway will no longer need to stop at a toll barrier, according to a report by Live Hindustan – NCR. The toll will still be charged, but cameras will scan vehicle number plates and deduct the prescribed amount through FASTag without requiring drivers to halt or open their windows.
The system is being introduced in the Karouli Bangar area, where ANPR, or automatic number plate recognition, cameras are being installed in place of a conventional toll barrier. Once a vehicle passes through the designated point, the camera will read its registration number and the linked FASTag account will be charged the applicable toll amount.
The change is intended to make movement smoother on the link expressway connecting Noida International Airport and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Airport passengers and other motorists using the route are expected to be the primary beneficiaries because vehicles will not have to queue at a toll plaza for payment.
The report said the arrangement could reduce the long lines and recurring congestion seen on the route, including during the festive season. The expressway is also connected to the Mohna area of Haryana, making the tolling arrangement relevant to traffic moving between the airport, Greater Noida and adjoining parts of Haryana.
The link is expected to be connected to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway by the end of December, according to the report. Once that work is completed, the route is expected to open fully, providing a more direct connection between Noida International Airport and Mohna. The report did not specify the exact toll amount or provide an operational date for the ANPR-based deductions.
Barrier-free electronic tolling is already used on several roads in the country. The Delhi–Meerut Expressway in Uttar Pradesh is cited in the report as an example. The highway, built to connect Delhi with western Uttar Pradesh, uses ANPR cameras and an automatic payment arrangement described as an MLFF, or multi-lane free-flow, system.
For motorists, the new arrangement will shift the toll experience from a physical payment point to an automated roadside system. Its operation will depend on accurate number-plate recognition and successful FASTag deductions as the link expressway expands its connections to the wider regional road network.
