Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has inspected construction of the Tunnel Aquarium at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoo in Mumbai, with officials instructed to complete the work by January 2027.
A tunnel aquarium is a public visitor facility that places aquatic exhibits alongside or above a viewing route, allowing people to observe marine life while moving through an enclosed space. Such facilities require coordinated work on structural interiors, visitor circulation, water systems and safety arrangements before they can receive visitors.
The inspection covered the aquarium construction along with other projects and initiatives within the garden and zoo complex. Bhide also visited a hibiscus exhibition featuring about 50 varieties in different colours, which is open to the public.
The civic body also planted a Century Palm at the garden under the central government’s One Tree Mother campaign and in connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. The activity adds a planting programme to the site’s existing botanical and visitor functions.
The aquarium project remains under construction, and the January 2027 instruction provides the stated target for completion. The garden and zoo combine plant collections, animal facilities and public displays, making construction planning important for maintaining visitor movement and managing works within an operating urban attraction.
