The Delhi Cabinet has approved a Rs 244.87-crore, 250-bed Super-Speciality-cum-Trauma Block at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden, expanding emergency, surgical and critical-care capacity in East Delhi. The seven-storey facility is targeted to become operational by 2028 under Phase-IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.
The new block will be built within the existing GTB Hospital campus, avoiding the need for additional land. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said GTB Hospital, described by the government as the only major government hospital in East Delhi, is dealing with a heavy patient load and high bed occupancy.
“Once the new block becomes operational, critical patients will have access to 24×7 emergency and trauma care, specialist treatment, diagnostics, surgery and intensive care at one place,” Gupta said.
Spread across around 22,550 square metres, the facility will include a basement, ground floor and six upper floors. It will have 48 specialist outpatient department rooms, nine modern operation theatres and 77 critical-care beds, including 70 ICU beds and five Burns ICU beds.
The ground floor will house a round-the-clock emergency department along with CT scan, MRI and X-ray facilities. Ultrasound and laboratory services will also be available, while the basement will accommodate a blood bank and laboratory.
The 250-bed capacity will include 20 emergency beds, four isolation beds, 22 pre- and post-operative beds, 102 general ward beds and 25 private rooms. Specialist services listed for the block include neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care.
The second floor will have a 72-bed ICU. The fourth and fifth floors will accommodate general and private wards, while the sixth floor will include offices, classrooms and a laboratory for training doctors.
According to the government, the integrated facility is intended to strengthen East Delhi’s ability to handle serious accidents and critical emergencies by bringing emergency response, diagnostics, surgery and intensive care into a single hospital complex.
A committee comprising senior officials from the Centre and the Delhi government will monitor construction and review progress every three months. The project’s stated target is to make the trauma block operational by 2028.
