Mumbai’s Ganesh Chaturthi public holiday on September 14 has altered the operating schedules of schools, colleges, banks, courts, financial markets and commodity trading, while essential services and public transport remain available across the city.
The most significant transport change is the extension of Maha Mumbai Metro services on Lines 2A, 7, 9 and 2B. Services will run until 12:30am from September 14 to 25, with the last trains departing at 12:30am instead of the usual 11pm. The extended schedule is intended to support travel during Ganeshotsav, when movement around major celebration areas is expected to increase.
On Line 2A, the last trains will depart from Andheri West and Dahisar East. On Lines 7 and 9, the extended services will operate from Gundavali and Kashigaon, while Line 2B will run later from Maharashtra Nagar-Mandale and Chembur. The metro network will also add 10 to 15 trips each day during the extended period.
Mumbai’s suburban local train services and BEST buses will continue to operate. However, commuters may encounter heavier crowds and traffic changes near major Ganpati celebration areas. Passengers using public transport have been advised through the reported operating arrangements to account for increased demand and possible local movement restrictions.
Hospitals and emergency medical services will remain functional during the holiday. Emergency departments, ambulances and critical-care services will operate as usual. Patients with scheduled appointments or non-emergency procedures may need to confirm arrangements directly with their hospitals, as holiday-related changes may apply to planned services.
Schools and colleges across Maharashtra will remain closed on September 14. The holiday covers educational institutions and allows students, teachers and staff to participate in Ganeshotsav celebrations and associated religious and cultural programmes.
Banks in Mumbai, including public- and private-sector banks, will also remain closed. Customers will continue to have access to digital banking, automated teller machines and online payment services, but branch-based transactions will not be available during the holiday.
Courts across Mumbai will remain closed, with no regular court proceedings or administrative work scheduled for the day. Indian stock markets, including the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange, have declared a full trading holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi.
The Multi Commodity Exchange will remain closed during its morning trading session from 9am to 5pm. Trading is scheduled to resume at 5pm, with the evening session continuing until 11:30pm or, where applicable, until 11:55pm. The metro’s extended operating schedule will remain in place through September 25.
