Amazon has announced an expansion of its India logistics network ahead of the festive season, adding 20 fulfilment centres, six sort centres and 150 last-mile delivery stations across the country. The company said the expansion is part of its announced investment of more than ₹2,800 crore to strengthen its operations and infrastructure.
The new facilities will increase Amazon’s total storage capacity in India by 50 per cent to 64 million cubic feet, according to the company. The facilities will be operated and managed by third-party logistics service providers.
The expansion extends beyond India’s largest metropolitan markets. All six new sort centres are located in Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Meerut, Ramanagar, Raipur and Varanasi. Seven of the 20 new fulfilment centres are also being established in non-metro cities, indicating that the network additions include locations outside the company’s primary metropolitan operating base.
Amazon’s sort centres are used to consolidate and route shipments before they move to delivery stations or other parts of the logistics network. The last-mile delivery stations handle the final stage of deliveries to customers. The company said the 150 new delivery stations are spread across 118 cities.
Twelve locations will receive an Amazon last-mile delivery station for the first time. They are Bhojpur, Bokajan, Jalaun, Jehanabad, Namsai, Puruliya, Ribhoi, Senapati, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Ukhrul and Wokha. The locations cover a mix of smaller cities and districts, including areas in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
The network expansion comes as Amazon prepares for an anticipated increase in consumer demand during the festive period. The company had earlier announced more than 1.6 lakh seasonal work opportunities across 400 cities, covering metropolitan markets as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations.
Abhinav Singh, Amazon’s Vice-President of Operations for India, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Turkiye and Africa, said the new facilities were operational and ready to serve customers ahead of the festive season. “These investments will help us respond to evolving customer and seller needs, while creating tens of thousands of work opportunities and supporting economic growth in communities across the country,” he said.
Amazon did not provide a city-wise breakdown of the 20 fulfilment centres or the investment allocated to individual facilities in the statement. The company’s next operational milestone is to handle the expected festive-season demand through the expanded network of fulfilment, sorting and last-mile delivery facilities.
