Mumbai rains intensified on Sunday after a prolonged dry spell, with the western suburbs recording the city’s highest average rainfall of 59.86 mm between 8 am and 6 pm, according to official data shared by the weather department and reported by Mid-Day.
The eastern suburbs recorded an average of 52.28 mm during the same period, while the city area registered 43.82 mm. The figures indicate that all three regions experienced substantial rainfall, with the western suburbs receiving the highest average total.
Rainfall had dropped sharply across Mumbai after July, with the city receiving little rain apart from a few brief spells, according to the report. Sunday’s showers therefore marked a significant change in conditions after the extended dry period.
The heaviest showers were reported between 1 am and 10 am. BKC Fire Station recorded 147.6 mm, the highest figure listed in the rainfall data. Borivali Fire Station received 138 mm, while Bandra Fire Station recorded 135.6 mm. The R Central Office recorded 135 mm and Magathane Bus Depot received 133.6 mm during the same measurement period.
The India Meteorological Department forecast generally cloudy skies over Mumbai, with a few spells of moderate rain or thundershowers. It also warned that some spells could be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph.
Residents were advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms because of the possibility of lightning and strong winds. The weather conditions also coincided with forecast tidal changes along the city’s coastline.
Mumbai was expected to experience a high tide of 4.46 metres at 1:05 pm on Sunday, followed by a low tide of 0.44 metres at 7:13 pm, according to the forecast cited in the report. Another high tide of 4.43 metres was forecast for 1:38 am on Monday, followed by a low tide of 1.21 metres at 7:17 am.
The rainfall distribution varied across the city, with the western suburbs recording the highest regional average and individual stations in both suburban areas reporting heavy totals. The IMD’s forecast of further moderate showers, lightning and strong winds remained the immediate weather advisory for residents.
