Bengaluru Traffic Police have proposed 25 new flyovers and underpasses at congested junctions and railway crossings as the city approaches 1.50 crore registered vehicles and traffic pressure continues to rise across major corridors.
The proposal covers 246 junctions identified by the police as facing severe traffic pressure. Alongside the grade-separated structures, the police have sought 2,340 traffic signs, thermoplastic lane markings at 707 locations, removal of unscientifically designed speed breakers and corrective work at 137 waterlogging spots.
The package also includes relocating 103 bus stops, creating 63 new bus bays, building more than 100 skywalks and developing multi-level parking complexes at 66 locations. The requests have been made to the Greater Bengaluru Authority, which is expected to direct the relevant agencies on implementation.
A senior traffic police official said adaptive traffic signals had received administrative approval for 110 additional junctions. The system is expected to be introduced and maintained for five years at a cost of Rs 56.45 crore, with the tender process under way. The official said automated traffic control signals had already been installed at 169 junctions.
The proposed flyovers and underpasses include locations such as Nagawara Junction, Jayanthinagar near Banaswadi, Bhattarahalli near KR Puram, KR Puram railway station, Phoenix Mall Junction and Big Bazaar Junction in Mahadevapura. Other identified sites include the Binny Mill railway gate on Magadi Road, Hebbal Junction on the Outer Ring Road, NES Junction in Yelahanka, Sadahalli Gate near Chikkajala, Sarakki Junction and Iblur Junction.
The police have identified Bellary Road, Old Madras Road, Old Airport Road, Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Kanakapura Road, Mysuru Road, Magadi Road, Tumakuru Road, West of Chord Road and the Outer Ring Road as high-density corridors. Bengaluru currently has 42 flyovers and 28 underpasses.
The traffic police official also referred to the state government’s approval for 11 elevated corridors covering 75.60 km at a cost of Rs 13,262.70 crore. The police have asked the GBA chief commissioner to ensure that the proposed structures are taken up quickly, describing them as essential for the city’s future movement needs.
According to the report, Bengaluru adds more than 2,000 new vehicles every day. Vehicles from neighbouring districts and states also enter and leave the city daily, adding to pressure on the existing road network. Metro expansion, public transport improvements and road widening have not prevented persistent congestion at Silk Board, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Tumakuru Road and Mysuru Road.
The proposals will require action by the GBA and the concerned civic and transport agencies. The immediate implementation milestone is the tender process for adaptive traffic signals, while decisions on the proposed flyovers, underpasses, bus facilities, parking complexes and other road improvements remain pending.
