The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will make steamed and fried modaks prepared by its supported women’s self-help groups available to residents across Mumbai during Ganeshotsav 2026, with home deliveries scheduled to begin on Ganesh Chaturthi, September 14.
The civic body is organising the initiative as “Modak Mahotsav 2026”, allowing Mumbaikars to order both ukadiche, or steamed, modaks and fried modaks through shgeshop.com. The delivery service will be available only within Mumbai and will continue throughout the festival, according to details shared by the BMC Planning Department.
Residents will have to register at least one day before placing an order. Online orders can be placed during the festival, while deliveries are scheduled to start from September 14, the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. The BMC has not specified in the announcement the number of participating groups, the total production capacity or the delivery charges.
Modaks are traditionally offered during Ganeshotsav and see increased demand during the festival. By facilitating the participation of women’s self-help groups, the BMC is combining a seasonal consumer service with an effort to provide these groups with a larger market for their products.
The participating groups receive financial assistance from the civic body. The BMC said the initiative is intended to promote products made by women’s self-help groups while creating additional business opportunities during the festive season. The programme also places the groups within a citywide ordering and delivery system rather than limiting sales to local or neighbourhood-level outlets.
The initiative is being conducted under the guidance of Meenal Turde, chairperson of the BMC Women and Child Welfare Committee. The committee’s involvement places the programme within the civic body’s wider work around women’s self-reliance and financial independence.
Dr Prachi Jambhekar, director of Planning, said the initiative would allow Mumbaikars to purchase modaks prepared by the groups while supporting women entrepreneurs. The BMC has described the festival programme as part of its efforts to promote products made by self-help groups and create additional market access for them.
For residents, the ordering process will require advance registration and online placement through the designated platform. For the participating groups, the programme creates a time-bound opportunity to reach customers across Mumbai during one of the city’s strongest annual periods of demand for modaks. The BMC’s announcement does not provide further details on the number of orders expected or the arrangements for managing production and delivery volumes.
The service is scheduled to begin with deliveries on September 14 and remain available throughout Ganeshotsav 2026, subject to the ordering and registration process set out by the civic body.
