The Ghodbunder water crisis has left residents in several parts of Thane dependent on tankers despite the presence of municipal water tanks and pumping infrastructure, with councillors raising questions about the Thane Municipal Corporation’s planning and permissions for new construction. The issue was discussed during the civic body’s general meeting on Friday, ahead of Ganeshotsav celebrations.
Residents in parts of Ghodbunder are reportedly receiving water in insufficient quantities and at low pressure. With regular supply disrupted, many households are relying on tanker water for their daily needs. Councillors said the problem was affecting residents’ everyday lives and required an immediate response from the civic administration.
Councillor Anita Thakur raised the issue during the meeting and said citizens in several areas had been forced to depend on tankers. She also pointed to inadequate supply and low pressure in parts of the locality, according to the report. The concern comes as Ghodbunder continues to include established residential areas as well as new construction activity.
Councillor Kamal Chaudhary questioned the functioning of existing water infrastructure. She said water tanks were present in the area but did not contain water, while some pumps were not operational. The absence of water in the tanks and the failure of pumps, she asked, raised questions about the usefulness of the infrastructure created for local supply.
The councillors also questioned the approval of large construction projects when the existing population was already facing shortages. Their intervention placed the immediate supply problem alongside the wider question of whether civic infrastructure is keeping pace with development in Ghodbunder. The water shortage has resurfaced at a time when the civic administration is preparing for Ganeshotsav, adding urgency to the discussion in the general body. The next step indicated during the meeting is a response from the municipal administration on water availability, tank operations and pump functioning in Ghodbunder. Councillors said the issue would be pursued in the coming meeting if residents’ complaints were not resolved.
