The Telangana government has set December 31, 2027, as the deadline for opening the Nagpur–Mancherial–Warangal–Khammam–Vijayawada Greenfield Highway to the public, with the state saying most land acquisition hurdles have now been resolved.
Roads and Buildings and Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy gave the assurance in the Telangana Legislative Council while responding to questions from MLCs Pochampally Srinivas Reddy and Prof. Kodandaram. He said the government would ask the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to provide an exit near Parkal to improve public access to the highway.
The proposed highway will run for 310 km, including about 280 km in Telangana. According to the minister, it will connect several districts and improve road links between Telangana, Nagpur and Vijayawada. The route is being developed as the Nagpur–Mancherial–Warangal–Khammam–Vijayawada Greenfield Highway.
The Mancherial–Warangal section has been divided into construction packages. The Letter of Acceptance for the work was issued on March 31, 2023, and the agreement was signed on May 23, 2023. The project was initially expected to be completed within 730 days, but construction was delayed by land acquisition problems, court cases and other hurdles.
Komatireddy said most land acquisition issues had been settled, although land handover was still pending at one or two locations. The outstanding stretches include sections of approximately 1–1.3 km and 5.7 km, according to the minister. The revised deadline for completion and opening has been fixed at December 31, 2027.
The minister also said farmers would not be disadvantaged during the acquisition process. Compensation, he said, would be paid according to market rates. The statement places the state government at the centre of resolving the remaining land-related delays, while construction is being carried out under NHAI supervision.
Komatireddy said Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari reviewed the project on May 26 and highlighted its importance to Telangana, particularly its connection with Nagpur. Under the implementation arrangement described in the Council, land acquisition is the responsibility of the state government. Telangana is also acting as the nodal agency and has committed to extending cooperation for the work.
The next milestones are the handover of the remaining land parcels, resolution of pending project hurdles and progress towards the December 31, 2027, completion deadline. The proposed Parkal exit will also require direction to NHAI before the access arrangement is finalised.
