Central Delhi is undergoing a coordinated streetscape and civic-maintenance drive ahead of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) installing decorative lighting, floral displays and summit-themed signages along routes linking the airport, hotels and Bharat Mandapam.
The summit, which India is hosting as chair of the grouping, is scheduled for September 12 and 13. Officials said preparations include illumination at Patel Chowk, Windsor Place, Mandi House, Teen Murti, Lok Kalyan Metro Station and the PMO roundabout. Seventeen major roundabouts, at least 12 hotel premises and 10 prominent NDMC buildings are also being illuminated.
The civic body has installed LED signages carrying the BRICS Summit logo and placed themed posters on street-light poles along important routes. Around 350 electrical panel boxes on roads have been refurbished with BRICS branding. NDMC officials also said streetlights along all summit-related routes had been verified, with faulty units identified during the exercise replaced.
Horticultural work has been expanded across the civic body’s jurisdiction. More than 15,000 potted ornamental plants are being placed at prominent locations, while floral boards are being installed at 15 sites and floral fountains at nine others. Landscaping, plantation, pruning and hedge-trimming have been intensified along major avenues, VIP routes and areas surrounding designated hotels.
Work has also been stepped up at the BRICS Friendship Rose Garden in Chanakyapuri. Established in 2016, when India last hosted the summit, the garden has 107 varieties of roses. Officials said pruning, grass cutting, landscaping and decorative floral arrangements were being carried out there and along adjoining routes in the diplomatic enclave.
The preparations extend beyond NDMC areas. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Public Works Department have conducted joint inspections of Bharat Mandapam, Sarai Kale Khan, Lodhi Road, Nizamuddin, Saket and Sheikh Sarai. Officials have been directed to intensify sanitation and cleaning operations and ensure adequate deployment of workers and machinery along identified routes and other important locations.
The summit is expected to bring together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries, as well as outreach invitees, for discussions on global and regional issues. India assumed its fourth BRICS chairship on January 1, with its 2026 presidency guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
