Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has begun preparatory work for Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 by inviting tenders for building demolition, land acquisition and utility shifting, even as the project awaits final approval from the Centre for its double-decker design.
The preparatory contracts, estimated at a combined cost of Rs 17.57 crore, cover four packages along the proposed 44.65-km network. BMRCL is proceeding with the early works to reduce the risk of delays and cost escalation after the project receives complete approval, according to the report by Vijay Karnataka.
The tenders include the complete or partial removal of buildings and other structures located along the proposed alignments. BMRCL has set a target of completing the clearance work within one year. The preparatory activities will also include land acquisition and the relocation of electricity lines, Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board pipelines and other utilities.
The first package covers the 10.88-km stretch from the JP Nagar 4th Phase station to the Mysuru Road station, at an estimated cost of Rs 4.74 crore. The second package, valued at Rs 4.54 crore, covers the 6.2-km stretch from Mysuru Road station to Kottigepalya Junction, along with a 1.64-km section covering the Sunkadakatte depot entry and exit and the proposed Sunkadakatte station.
The third package covers 13.171 km between Sumanahalli station and Kempapura station and has an estimated cost of Rs 4.29 crore. The fourth package, estimated at Rs 4 crore, covers 12.507 km between Hosahalli station and Kadabagere station, excluding the 1.64-km Sunkadakatte section included in the second package.
The tender documents reportedly require bids to be submitted by October 10, with the tenders scheduled to be finalised on October 12. The contracts are focused on preparatory clearance work and do not represent the start of full civil construction across the entire Phase 3 network.
Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 was approved by the Centre in 2024, but final approval for the double-decker configuration is still pending. The proposed project consists of two elevated corridors with 31 stations. The first corridor would run 32.15 km from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura, while the second would connect Hosahalli and Kadabagere along Magadi Road over 12.5 km and include nine stations.
BMRCL has set a target of completing both corridors by 2032. The immediate next steps are the award of the four preparatory packages, followed by building clearance, land-related work and utility relocation along the identified sections. Full project execution remains linked to the pending final approval for the proposed design.
