Residents and commuters travelling through Central, South and parts of West, North and East Delhi this weekend have been advised to prepare for traffic restrictions and diversions as the Capital hosts the BRICS Summit. The Delhi Traffic Police expects increased VVIP movement from Friday, with congestion likely on routes connecting Indira Gandhi International Airport, Bharat Mandapam and central Delhi.
Friday has been declared a holiday for Central government offices, while several private companies have opted for work-from-home arrangements to reduce pressure on the road network. Despite these measures, long convoys carrying summit invitees and VVIPs are expected to use arterial roads across the city.
The heaviest movement is expected around Bharat Mandapam, the summit venue, as well as in Lutyens’ Delhi and parts of South Delhi near the airport. The route between Indira Gandhi International Airport and Dhaula Kuan is also expected to experience congestion. Areas including Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, C-Hexagon, Mother Teresa Crescent, Sardar Patel Marg and Janpath are among the locations where traffic movement may be affected.
The traffic police has identified 22 diversion points, including Dr Dinesh Nandini Dalmia Chowk, Ram Charan Aggarwal Chowk, Guru Nanak Chowk, KG Marg and Outer Circle, Janpath, Patel Chowk, RML Hospital, Vande Mataram Marg and Simon Bolivar Marg, Dhaula Kuan Flyover and Moti Bagh Flyover.
Airport passengers have been advised to consider Metro services. Travellers approaching the airport from Gurgaon have been directed towards NH-48, Rao Gajraj Singh Marg, Old Delhi Gurugram Road, UER-II and the NH-48 service road before approaching the terminals. Routes listed for Terminal 1 include NH-48, the Mahipalpur Flyover and the T-3 Road, NH-48, Ulan Batar Marg and T-1 Road corridor.
Passengers travelling from Dwarka have been advised to use Sector-22 Dwarka Road and UER-II, including the newly operated tunnel towards Terminal 3. From New Delhi and South Delhi, suggested approaches include AIIMS Chowk, Ring Road, Moti Bagh Chowk, RTR Marg, Shankar Vihar Flyover, Sanjay T-Point, the NH-48 service road and the Mahipalpur Flyover-Rangpuri corridor.
Separate route advisories have also been issued for passengers travelling from other parts of Delhi. Those heading to New Delhi Railway Station from Dhaula Kuan have been advised to use Vande Mataram Marg, Panchkuian Road and the Outer Circle in Connaught Place before continuing via Chelmsford Road or Minto Road. Passengers travelling to Old Delhi Railway Station have been directed towards Dr Ambedkar Marg, Rani Jhansi Marg, the Rani Jhansi Flyover, Boulevard Road and Lothiyan Marg.
Parking will be prohibited within approximately 200 metres of roads placed under traffic control. The Delhi Traffic Police has asked commuters to monitor its official advisories and social-media updates during the summit period.
