The KDMC general body meeting was adjourned for the entire day on Wednesday after BJP councillors raised a protest over the removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image at a college in Pune, an action reportedly suggested by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) youth leader Amit Thackeray.
The issue was brought before the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation meeting by BJP group leader and councillor Shashikant Kamble. According to the report, Kamble demanded that the meeting be adjourned to register the party’s opposition to the incident. He said that no one had the right to insult the country’s highest leader.
Mayor Adv. Harshali Chaudhary subsequently announced the adjournment of the general body meeting for the day.
The decision led to an attempt by MNS councillors to respond in the house. Councillors Prahlad Mhatre and Ganesh Landge, who are part of the ruling arrangement with the Shinde Sena, stood up and sought permission to speak. They repeatedly asked that they be allowed to present their position on the issue.
The report said their requests were not taken up before the national anthem was played, after which the meeting proceedings came to an end.
