The Howrah Municipal Corporation has directed electricity suppliers to remove exposed and dangerously hanging wires from roads and street-light poles across the city ahead of Durga Puja, following a coordination meeting held with officials of the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation and the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company on Tuesday.
The meeting was convened by Howrah Municipal Commissioner Tejaswi Rana to address two immediate concerns during the festival period: maintaining uninterrupted electricity supply and preventing accidents linked to open electrical wires in public areas. Municipal officials said the discussion also covered public safety during the festival season.
According to the municipality, the commissioner instructed representatives of the electricity-supply agencies to remove cable connections tangled around street-light poles at various locations across Howrah. The direction covers wires that have been left hanging or arranged in ways that could create a hazard along roads and other public spaces.
The meeting also addressed the maintenance of electricity infrastructure before the festival. Officials were advised to ensure that the necessary systems supporting power supply in the city are properly maintained so that electricity service remains normal during Durga Puja.
The municipal discussions brought together the civic body and the two electricity-supply agencies responsible for different parts of the city’s power network. The coordination is intended to help identify and address exposed wires, illegal hanging cable networks and maintenance concerns before the expected increase in movement on Howrah’s roads during the celebrations.
