The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is deliberating the installation of thermal cameras or thermal guns at its water purification plants across the city. This initiative follows a recent incident at the Khadakwasla water purification facility in June, prompting PMC officials to explore advanced technologies to mitigate potential disruptions such as short circuits and mechanical failures.
The proposed thermal imaging equipment is envisaged to play a critical role in preemptive maintenance by identifying issues like heat loss, inadequate insulation, and water leakage. This technological upgrade is not only expected to bolster the reliability of water supply but also streamline energy audits and structural inspections within PMC’s expansive network of 11 water treatment plants. According to senior officials from PMC’s water supply department, the project will commence on a trial basis at one selected station, with plans for wider implementation contingent upon the success and utility demonstrated during this initial phase. The thermal cameras will facilitate detailed assessments in areas where traditional visual inspections are impractical, ensuring comprehensive coverage of potential vulnerabilities.
PMC’s water purification plants, located strategically across areas like Parvati, Cantonment, SNDT, Warje, Wadgaon, Holkar Bridge, and Bhama Askhed, collectively process nearly 1,500 million litres of water daily, catering not only to core PMC areas but also to 34 recently merged villages. The decision-making process regarding the procurement and deployment of thermal imaging technology involves meticulous evaluation of available options and their alignment with PMC’s operational objectives.
