A 16-car Vande Bharat Express began a trial run from Yesvantpur to Mangaluru Central on September 5, with South Western Railway officials assessing the train’s operating timings and safety requirements on the route, the Bengaluru divisional railway manager said.
The trial run was publicly announced by DRM Bengaluru through an official post on X. The post said the train had departed Yesvantpur for Mangaluru Central and that the exercise was being conducted to assess the timings of the proposed service.
The white-and-blue trainset seen in the accompanying video has 16 coaches. Senior officials and staff from operations, electrical traction, engineering and mechanical departments were involved in monitoring operational and safety factors during the trial, according to the report.
The Yesvantpur-Mangaluru Central rail route is approximately 360 kilometres long and connects Bengaluru with Karnataka’s coastal region. The proposed service would add another premium intercity train option between the state’s capital and Mangaluru, although the railway has not announced a timetable, fare structure or commercial launch date in the information available so far.
The trial is an operational assessment, not a confirmation that passenger services have begun. Such runs allow railway authorities to examine journey timings, track conditions, traction systems, rolling stock performance and other operating requirements before a service is opened to the public. The final schedule would also depend on railway approvals and the availability of operating slots on the route.
The report described the proposed train as Karnataka’s 13th Vande Bharat service. It said the state currently has 12 pairs of Vande Bharat Express services, while the new operation would serve the Yesvantpur-Mangaluru Central corridor. The exact relationship between the proposed service and the existing service count was not detailed in the official trial-run announcement.
Vande Bharat trains have expanded across India since the first service began in 2019. The network includes chair-car services as well as newer sleeper-train plans for longer-distance travel. The source report said 162 Vande Bharat services are currently operating nationally, but the trial announcement itself did not provide a revised national service count or details of the proposed Karnataka timetable.
For passengers, the immediate development is the start of the route trial rather than the launch of bookings. Further details on the commercial operation, including stopping stations, departure times, fares and the date of the first passenger run, are expected only after the railway completes its assessment and issues an official notification.
