Vasai-Virar inflation has pushed up household expenses by an estimated Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 a month, according to local residents and wholesale and retail traders, with essential food items, cooking oil, fuel and rent among the costs reported to have increased over the past three to four months.
The price increases have been reported across pulses, grains, sugar, edible oils, vegetables, coconuts, spices and dry fruits in Vasai and surrounding areas. Traders attributed the rise in several food items to uneven rainfall, lower production and higher demand ahead of the festive season.
Prices of masoor, tur, urad, chana, moong and peas have increased by about Rs 5 to Rs 20 per kilogram, according to information provided by local wholesale and retail traders. Rates of everyday staples such as peanuts, wheat, rice and bajra have also risen, the report said.
Sugar prices have increased by Rs 20 per kilogram, raising the cost of tea, sweets and other food products. Edible oils, including soybean, peanut and sunflower oil, have continued to remain Rs 15 to Rs 20 more expensive, adding pressure to household kitchen budgets. Coconut prices have risen by between Rs 10 and Rs 25, increasing expenses connected with festivals and religious ceremonies.
Traders also linked higher retail prices to fuel costs. With transportation expenses remaining high, the cost of moving goods to local markets has increased, affecting the final prices paid by consumers. The report did not cite official government price data or a formal market survey quantifying the increases across Vasai-Virar.
Residents said they were changing their purchasing habits during the festive period. Vaibhavi Raut Mane, a Vasai resident, said families normally bought larger quantities during festivals but were now comparing prices across shops and purchasing from outlets offering cheaper rates. Despite cutting back on expenses, she said her monthly household budget had increased by Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000.
Households are also facing pressure from expenses beyond food. A resident identified as Ramnivas said rising fuel costs and loan instalments had become difficult to manage. He also pointed to higher rents in parts of Vasai-Virar where several buildings are undergoing redevelopment, saying the combined increase had made it harder for families to balance their monthly spending.
The reported increase comes as households prepare for higher seasonal demand and festival-related purchases. Local residents are responding by reducing consumption, comparing prices between shops and limiting purchases where possible. The report did not specify any government intervention, price-control measure or municipal response to the increases.
