Kolkata’s digital infrastructure is entering a new phase as data centres, AI facilities and high-capacity networks expand across the city’s eastern growth corridor. The shift is moving Kolkata beyond its traditional IT-services role towards a more infrastructure-intensive digital economy, bringing potential gains in jobs and investment while raising questions around electricity demand, cooling, land and long-term environmental resilience.
The transformation is most visible around New Town and the wider Rajarhat technology corridor. Government policy has positioned West Bengal as an emerging data-centre destination, while the state’s 2026–27 budget notes that major facilities already operate in the Bengal Silicon Valley area, including a 16 MW CtrlS facility and a 6 MW ST Telemedia installation.The scale of planned infrastructure is also increasing. NTT DATA is developing a 25-plus MW data-centre campus in New Town, with the first facility planned at 6.4 MW of IT load. The campus is designed with redundant power and cooling systems, reflecting the heavier technical requirements of modern computing.For Kolkata AI infrastructure, the implications extend beyond server buildings. AI workloads require concentrated computing power, reliable electricity, high-speed connectivity and increasingly sophisticated cooling. That makes electricity networks, fibre routes and urban utilities as important to the digital economy as office space and technology parks.
The city already has public-sector foundations for this transition. West Bengal’s State Data Centre in Kolkata supports government applications and uses high-density rack infrastructure, dual-path UPS systems and dedicated cooling arrangements. Separately, a government technology project records deployment of an NVIDIA DGX A100 system at the NIC Kolkata Mini Data Centre for AI and high-performance computing applications.Connectivity is another strategic advantage. Kolkata sits within an expanding eastern India digital ecosystem, while state policy has linked future data-centre growth with technology hubs, electronics manufacturing clusters and submarine-cable infrastructure. The wider national market is also moving rapidly: India’s installed data-centre capacity has risen substantially since 2020, with West Bengal identified by the Union government as one of the newer investment destinations.But Kolkata AI infrastructure will also test the city’s ability to accommodate energy-intensive development responsibly. Data centres operate continuously and generate substantial heat, making power efficiency, water use, cooling technology and renewable-energy sourcing increasingly relevant to planning decisions.
For Kolkata, the next stage is therefore not simply about attracting more servers. The stronger measure of success will be whether digital growth is matched by resilient power systems, efficient buildings, skilled local employment and infrastructure that can expand without adding unnecessary pressure to the city’s environmental resources.
