Hyderabad Pushes Faster Work On Adilabad Mamnoor Airports
HYDERABAD: Telangana is seeking faster progress on two regional aviation projects as the state looks to improve air connectivity beyond Hyderabad. The proposed Adilabad and Mamnoor airports are being positioned as important infrastructure for northern Telangana and the wider Warangal region.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy recently met Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu in New Delhi and sought faster action on both projects. The discussions focused on moving approvals, construction and operational planning forward. The Mamnoor airport project has reached a more advanced stage. The Telangana government has completed the required land acquisition and handed over the land for development. The Union government has indicated that tenders are expected to be invited within two weeks, with finalisation planned by December. The foundation work is also expected to begin in December. This timeline gives the Warangal airport project a clearer path towards construction. However, the next challenge will be maintaining momentum between tendering, award of work and actual execution. Delays at any of these stages could push back the benefits expected by local residents and businesses. The Adilabad airport remains at a different stage. The state has sought a joint meeting between the Defence and Civil Aviation ministries to settle runway specifications. This is important because the proposed facility involves coordination between defence and civil aviation requirements. Earlier government plans have also proposed passenger, cargo, MRO and hangar facilities at the site.
The proposed facilities could give Adilabad a wider economic role than a basic passenger airport. Cargo infrastructure could support regional businesses and agricultural trade, while MRO facilities could create opportunities around aircraft maintenance and related services. Their actual impact, however, will depend on airline connectivity, demand and supporting road infrastructure. The Mamnoor airport project could similarly influence regional development around Warangal. Better air connectivity can reduce travel barriers for business, tourism, education and healthcare. It could also support the movement of visitors to the region’s heritage destinations if airport access is linked effectively with local transport. The state has also raised the possibility of expanding heli-tourism in Telangana. In addition, aviation officials are preparing a report on the proposed seaplane landing facility at Hussain Sagar, which is expected to be submitted to the state government within two weeks.
The immediate priority, therefore, is execution rather than announcing more proposals. For the Adilabad and Mamnoor airports, clearances, construction schedules, transport links and operational planning will determine whether these projects deliver meaningful regional connectivity. If implemented on schedule, the two airports could gradually reduce the dependence of northern Telangana travellers on Hyderabad for air travel while supporting more balanced infrastructure growth across the state.
