HYDERABAD: Traffic diversions around the Vaishali Nagar Railway Underpass will continue until September 16 as road widening and storm water drainage works remain unfinished. The extension covers another 14 days from September 3 and will affect commuters travelling between Hafeezpet, Kondapur, My Home Mangala and nearby residential areas.
The Vaishali Nagar underpass diversions are linked to infrastructure work aimed at addressing both road capacity and waterlogging. The underpass has faced flooding concerns during heavy rainfall, making improvements to storm water drainage an important part of the project. The latest extension follows earlier traffic advisories issued while the work progressed. Delays in completing the required road and drainage improvements have now pushed the restrictions further into September. Traffic from My Home Mangala towards Hafeezpet will be redirected through Raghavendra Nagar Colony, Hi-Tension Road, the Kondapur RTA office and Hafeezpet Road Over Bridge. Vehicles travelling from the Telangana Contractors Cultural Club towards the underpass will follow a similar diversion through Raghavendra Nagar Colony, Hi-Tension Road and Hafeezpet before continuing towards Allwyn Junction.
Commuters travelling from Hafeezpet, RTC Colony and My Home Jewel towards My Home Mangala will instead use Pipeline Road, Hafeezpet ROB, the Genpact-side road and Kondapur-Allwyn Junction. Additional diversions will affect traffic from Vasavi Lake City, Hafeezpet Lake, Gopal Nagar and Calvary Temple. These routes will use different U-turns, junctions and the Hafeezpet flyover to connect with Kondapur and surrounding neighbourhoods. The Vaishali Nagar underpass diversions are not only a traffic-management measure. They are also intended to provide working space for road widening and storm water drainage improvements. For residents, drainage capacity is particularly important as intense rainfall can quickly disrupt low-lying road sections. Improving water flow alongside the road network could reduce repeated disruption during the monsoon and improve long-term road reliability.
However, prolonged diversions can place additional pressure on neighbouring roads. Increased traffic on already busy junctions may create longer travel times for residents who do not normally use the underpass. With restrictions now continuing through September 16, commuters will need to allow additional travel time and follow the designated alternative routes. The impact is likely to be felt most strongly during peak hours when traffic volumes are higher. The situation also highlights the importance of completing drainage and road projects within planned timelines. When temporary diversions remain in place for extended periods, nearby communities experience the effects through longer routes, additional fuel use and increased congestion. The focus should therefore remain on completing the pending works while maintaining safe access for pedestrians, residents and emergency services. The Vaishali Nagar underpass diversions will remain necessary until the infrastructure work is completed. Once the road widening and drainage improvements are finished, the corridor could provide more reliable movement and better resilience against waterlogging.
