Hyderabad Examines Dedicated Route For IT Commuters
Hyderabad: Cyberabad Traffic Police is examining a dedicated peak-hour carriageway between JNTU and Raidurg Metro Station to ease congestion along one of the city’s busiest technology corridors. The proposal is being assessed alongside changes to U-turns and free-left movements at Gachibowli and Raidurg. If implemented, the plan could improve commute reliability while reducing traffic conflicts for other road users.
Traffic officials recently inspected the road between JNTU and Synchrony near Raidurg Metro Station. The review focused on whether a separate carriageway could be created for employees travelling towards the Raidurg IT corridor during weekday peak hours. The JNTU–Raidurg stretch passes through major employment areas and carries heavy traffic during office hours. The pressure is especially visible from Monday to Friday, when large numbers of employees travel towards workplaces in Madhapur, HITEC City and Raidurg. A dedicated route could separate a significant portion of office-bound traffic from general movement. This may help reduce delays and make journeys more predictable for commuters. The proposal, however, remains at the feasibility stage. Its effectiveness will depend on available road space, junction design, access points and how traffic is managed at connecting roads. The traffic review also examined U-turns and free-left arrangements at Gachibowli and Raidurg. Officials assessed vehicle merging points, turning movements, road geometry and queues forming around U-turns.
These junctions play an important role in the movement of traffic between the city’s residential areas and western employment districts. Poorly timed turns or merging movements can create queues that spread to adjoining roads. Changes to U-turn locations or free-left arrangements could therefore improve traffic flow without requiring immediate major road construction. The inspection also considered ways to give greater priority to public transport and improve movement at important junctions. This is significant because long-term congestion management cannot depend only on creating additional road capacity. Raidurg is already an important public transport destination. The existing metro network connects the station with several parts of Hyderabad, including JNTU through the Blue Line corridor. Improving the connection between residential areas, workplaces and the metro station could encourage more commuters to shift from private vehicles to public transport. The proposed carriageway could offer short-term relief during office hours, but the corridor also highlights a wider urban planning challenge. Hyderabad’s western employment districts continue to attract businesses and workers, increasing pressure on roads, junctions and public transport.
Traffic solutions therefore need to combine junction improvements with stronger last-mile connectivity, safer walking routes and better access to mass transit. For commuters, the immediate priority is reducing unpredictable delays. For the city, the longer-term goal should be creating a transport system where growing employment districts can remain accessible without continually adding pressure to existing roads. The Cyberabad traffic review is an early step in that direction. Its impact will depend on whether the proposed changes are followed by practical implementation and integrated with broader public transport and mobility planning.
