Kolkata Sleeper Rail Link Gains Wider Significance
Kolkata’s role in India’s emerging overnight rail network is set to gain importance as production of the next generation of Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets advances at the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in Latur. The development matters to Kolkata because Howrah already anchors India’s first regular Vande Bharat Sleeper service to Kamakhya, creating a faster rail connection between eastern and northeastern India and strengthening the city’s position as a major passenger and economic gateway.
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper service on the Howrah–Kamakhya route began regular operations on 22 January 2026. The service forms part of a wider shift towards faster overnight rail travel, particularly on corridors where air travel can be expensive and conventional trains require significantly longer journeys.The immediate manufacturing update comes from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), which said work is progressing on the sleeper-train programme at Latur. The first prototype, previously expected earlier, is now targeted for completion by the end of the current financial year. An Indo-Russian joint venture involving RVNL and Transmashholding is responsible for a planned 120 sleeper trainsets, each consisting of 16 coaches.For Kolkata, the significance extends beyond the train itself. Howrah is a major interchange for eastern India, connecting the metropolitan region with West Bengal’s districts and long-distance routes towards the Northeast.
The existing sleeper service covers roughly 966 km between Howrah and Kamakhya and is designed to reduce journey time compared with conventional overnight services. Government information has indicated a travel time of about 14 hours, compared with roughly 17 hours for the Saraighat Express.The passenger impact could be broader if additional sleeper services are introduced on suitable long-distance corridors. Students, workers, traders and families are among the groups that depend heavily on overnight rail because it combines lower travel costs with the ability to save a hotel night and reduce daytime travel. For Kolkata, stronger rail links could also support tourism, education and regional business movement.However, faster trains alone will not determine the success of Kolkata’s rail expansion. Capacity on existing routes, train paths, station infrastructure, maintenance facilities and passenger demand all influence whether new services can be introduced. The Railways has explicitly identified these factors when explaining the conditions governing future Vande Bharat services.
The next challenge is therefore not simply adding premium trains, but ensuring that Kolkata’s wider rail system can absorb growing demand while remaining accessible, reliable and efficient. Better long-distance rail connectivity can support lower-carbon inter-city mobility, but its wider urban value will depend on dependable local connections to stations and equitable access for ordinary passengers.
