Hyderabad is stepping up preparations for Ganesh Utsav 2026, with civic and law-enforcement agencies reviewing sanitation, roads, lighting, traffic management and immersion arrangements across the city. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad City Police, HYDRAA and other departments are coordinating ahead of the festival, with officials focusing on reducing public inconvenience and managing pressure at key immersion locations.
A high-level coordination meeting reviewed the city’s readiness, including the procession route from Balapur to Tank Bund. Officials were asked to complete pending road repairs, tree pruning and street-lighting works before the celebrations begin. The civic body also plans to deploy additional sanitation staff and machinery during the festival. Mobile toilets and drinking water facilities will be provided at major immersion points. These services will be particularly important around areas expected to experience heavy footfall. Timely waste removal can also help prevent the accumulation of festival-related waste on roads and near water bodies. Immersion arrangements remain one of the key operational challenges during Ganesh Utsav. Large crowds, processions and vehicle movement can place additional pressure on roads leading to immersion points.
GHMC officials reviewed barricading, parking arrangements and crane positioning as part of the preparations. Ganesh Action Teams are also expected to support management along the designated procession route. From an urban management perspective, keeping pedestrian and vehicle movement organised will be important. Clear access routes can reduce congestion and improve safety for residents, devotees and emergency services. The festival will involve several departments working across the city. To streamline communication, GHMC, Hyderabad City Police, HYDRAA and other agencies will coordinate through a control room. Such coordination can help authorities respond more quickly to traffic disruptions, sanitation issues and other problems during peak festival activity. The approach also reflects the need for integrated city management during large public events. GHMC has appealed to devotees to use clay-based, eco-friendly Ganesh idols. The recommendation is aimed at reducing the impact of immersion activities on Hyderabad’s lakes and other water bodies. Reducing harmful materials entering these ecosystems during large festivals can support longer-term water management efforts.
