Hyderabad Moves to Clear Indiramma Housing Payments
Telangana is moving to release pending payments for beneficiaries who have completed houses under the Indiramma housing programme, after delays in expected central assistance placed pressure on the state’s finances. The government says it will use its own resources to prevent completed homes from remaining unpaid, highlighting the financial and implementation challenges surrounding affordable housing delivery.
The state has released Rs 185 crore for 15,475 beneficiaries whose houses have been completed, according to the state housing administration. Eligible beneficiaries who finished construction by March 31 are scheduled to receive their final instalments in their bank accounts, while payments to others are expected to follow in stages. The decision comes after the state government raised concerns over the absence of central funding for the rural housing component. State officials said repeated requests for financial support had not resulted in the release of funds, creating uncertainty for households that had already completed construction. The government had held back some final bill payments while awaiting the expected assistance. That approach, however, risked leaving families who had completed construction with outstanding claims even after meeting the programme’s requirements. For low-income households, delays in housing payments can have consequences beyond administrative inconvenience. Families often finance construction through savings, informal borrowing or staged purchases of materials. A delayed government instalment can therefore increase financial stress and potentially slow completion or settlement of remaining obligations.
The situation also illustrates the wider fiscal challenge of delivering large-scale affordable housing.
