Gujarat Grid Expansion Opens New Infrastructure Push

Gujarat is set for a major expansion of its electricity transmission network as a new interstate system is planned to carry power from large renewable-energy zones in the state. The project will connect up to 6,500 MW of planned renewable capacity, highlighting a growing infrastructure challenge: generating clean electricity is only useful when grids can move it reliably to where demand exists.

The project covers the integration of 5,500 MW from the Jam Khambhaliya Renewable Energy Zone Phase II and another 1,000 MW from Jamnagar Phase I. The transmission system will be developed under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer model, following a tariff-based competitive bidding process. The discovered tariff is ₹822.91 crore a year. Importantly, that figure represents the annual transmission tariff and should not be read as the project’s construction cost.At the centre of the planned Gujarat transmission infrastructure is a new gas-insulated substation at Kalyanpur. The system will also require additional transformer capacity and extensions to bays at substations already under construction. A network of 765 kV transmission lines is planned across Gujarat to strengthen the movement of electricity over longer distances.For Gujarat, the significance goes beyond another power project. The state has become a major location for large-scale solar and wind development, but renewable generation is often concentrated far from major consumption centres. That makes transmission infrastructure a key part of the state’s broader development strategy.

Without adequate grid capacity, new generation assets can face constraints in sending electricity into the wider power system.Urban planners and infrastructure specialists increasingly view this type of network as enabling infrastructure for the energy transition. Stronger transmission links can help cities and industrial areas access a larger pool of renewable electricity while reducing dependence on generation located close to consumption centres. The wider benefit will depend on how effectively the network is integrated with future demand, storage capacity and distribution systems.the Kalyanpur component is also significant because gas-insulated substations can provide high-voltage switching and transformation facilities within a comparatively compact footprint. That can be useful where land availability and development pressures make conventional substations harder to accommodate.

The Letter of Intent for the project was received on 21 August 2026. The next stage will be execution of the transmission system and coordination with renewable-generation projects and other grid assets. For Gujarat, the test will be whether new infrastructure keeps pace with renewable capacity while remaining reliable, efficient and compatible with the long-term needs of communities, industry and rapidly expanding urban regions.
