Goa: MLA Michael Lobo of Calangute has affirmed a commitment to replace trees lost during infrastructure development. Speaking on Monday, Lobo addressed concerns surrounding environmental impact and urban congestion, emphasizing the necessity of balancing developmental needs with ecological preservation.
Acknowledging the uproar over tree removal in Siolim, Lobo clarified that the action was taken to alleviate traffic congestion. “We had cut the trees for road widening. For every tree removed, we have mandated the planting of three new trees,” Lobo stated, underscoring efforts to mitigate environmental damage. Lobo urged public cooperation in the face of mounting traffic woes. “If we refrain from widening roads, we must accept increased traffic or reduce vehicle purchases,” he asserted, addressing public skepticism over developmental projects conflicting with environmental concerns.
Lobo, in collaboration with the Calangute BJP mandal, initiated the ‘One Tree One Life’ programme. This initiative distributed saplings of fruit-bearing trees to local residents, advocating for community-driven reforestation efforts. “The response to our tree distribution event was overwhelming, demonstrating widespread public support for nature conservation,” remarked a Calangute panchayat member. The ‘One Tree One Life’ programme, organized by the Calangute panchayat biodiversity management committee, underscored community engagement in sustainable practices. “People enthusiastically participated, reflecting a collective commitment to replenishing our green cover,” the panchayat member added.
Moving forward, the focus remains on balancing infrastructure expansion with ecological sustainability. Lobo’s proactive stance signals a proactive approach to address environmental concerns amid ongoing development projects. As Calangute navigates the intersection of progress and environmental preservation, stakeholders anticipate collaborative efforts to sustainably manage urban growth while preserving natural habitats.
