Kolkata’s public transport network has entered a new operational phase with expanded Metro services across its Blue and Green corridors, introducing earlier morning departures, later evening operations and additional daily train trips. The revised timetable is expected to improve commuting options for thousands of office-goers, shift workers, students and other regular passengers while strengthening the city’s reliance on mass transit over private vehicles.
The revised Kolkata Metro schedule came into effect on an experimental basis from 27 July, extending operating hours on weekdays and Saturdays. The first trains on both the North-South (Blue) and East-West (Green) corridors now begin at 6 am, while the last departures have been extended to 10.30 pm. On Sundays, operations continue to start at 9 am but now also run until 10.30 pm. Authorities have also increased the number of train services across both corridors to improve network capacity and reduce waiting times during busy travel periods. The changes reflect growing demand for flexible public transport in a metropolitan region where commuting patterns have evolved beyond conventional office hours. Earlier services are expected to benefit workers with morning shifts, educational institutions and business districts that witness high passenger movement before peak hours. Likewise, extended evening operations offer greater convenience for employees in the service sector and residents returning from commercial or recreational destinations.
Urban mobility specialists note that improvements in service frequency can have a wider impact than simply shortening travel times. More reliable and accessible Metro operations often encourage commuters to shift away from private vehicles, easing congestion on city roads, reducing fuel consumption and supporting cleaner urban air. While infrastructure expansion attracts significant attention, optimising existing assets through operational improvements can also deliver meaningful benefits for residents. The Kolkata Metro schedule revision also aligns with the broader objective of increasing the efficiency of public transport systems without requiring immediate large-scale construction. Additional train services can improve passenger distribution across peak hours, minimise overcrowding on platforms and enhance the overall travel experience, particularly in one of India’s busiest urban rail networks.Transport planners say the effectiveness of the revised timetable will ultimately depend on sustained passenger demand and seamless integration with buses, suburban rail services and last-mile connectivity. Efficient multimodal links remain critical if the city is to maximise the benefits of expanded Metro operations.
As the revised schedule is being implemented on a trial basis, operational performance and commuter response are likely to shape future decisions. If the changes demonstrate measurable improvements in accessibility and passenger volumes, they could provide a model for strengthening urban mobility while supporting a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient transport network for Kolkata.
